Elaphomyces aculeatus, commonly known as a type of false truffle or deer truffle, is an ascomycete fungus that interacts with the root systems of forest trees. In arboriculture and forest management, it is recognized for its potential to impact the growth of seedlings by modifying root structure and nutrient uptake, sometimes acting as an opportunistic agent in stressed nursery environments.

The disease mechanism involves the formation of dense fungal mycelium around tree roots, which may be classified as ectomycorrhizal. However, when the colonization becomes too aggressive, it interferes with the plant’s ability to access essential minerals and water, leading to a decline in vigor, which is particularly detrimental to young plantations or high-value forest seedlings.

Key symptoms of an infestation include stunted shoot growth, chlorosis, and reduced root mass. Underground, the fungus manifests as spherical fruiting bodies covered in distinctive, sharp, aculeate spines. Infected root systems may show signs of necrotized tissue, fragility, and a loss of fine root hairs, which significantly reduces the tree's overall nutrient acquisition efficiency.

The spread and development of the fungus are favored by moist, acidic soils and poor aeration. The spores are primarily disseminated by soil fauna and small mammals that consume the fruiting bodies and transport the fungal spores throughout the forest or nursery. High-density planting in poorly drained soils provides an ideal environment for the rapid expansion of the fungus.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • Ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent excessive moisture accumulation.
  • Monitoring soil acidity and applying lime where necessary to reach a balanced pH.
  • Utilizing strict sanitary controls in nurseries to prevent the introduction of contaminated soil.
  • Mechanical removal of observed fruiting bodies to reduce the local spore bank.
