The causative agent belongs to the Ascomycota division. It functions primarily by forming a dense mycelial mantle around the root tips of trees. This colonization pattern can alter the nutrient absorption capacity of the plant, especially in high-density nursery environments where competitive soil interactions are magnified, leading to reduced vitality.
Host plants commonly affected include various coniferous and broad-leaved species such as pines, oaks, and beeches. The primary signs of influence include stunted height growth, chlorosis of needles or leaves, and a general lack of vigor in young saplings compared to non-affected specimens in the same soil composition.
