Description

The Elaphomycetaceae family, commonly referred to as deer truffles, are hypogeous fungi characterized by their subterranean growth. While often considered beneficial mycorrhizal partners in mature forests, their presence in nursery environments can sometimes complicate the healthy development of young tree seedlings.

These fungi act as ectomycorrhizal symbionts. The primary concern in agroforestry is not a direct disease in the traditional sense, but the physiological stress caused to seedlings when the mycorrhizal network outcompetes the host plant for essential nitrogen or phosphorus in confined container or bed environments.

Affected plant species include various tree crops such as Fagus (beech), Quercus (oak), Pinus (pine), and Picea (spruce). In nursery settings, dense colonization of roots by these fungi can reduce the overall growth rate and vigor of seedlings, making them more susceptible to secondary pathogenic infections.

Environmental conditions favoring the spread of these fungi include acidic, humic soils and adequate forest floor moisture. The primary vector for spore dispersal is zoochory, specifically through small and large mammals that consume the subterranean fruiting bodies and spread the spores through their waste.

Management and prevention strategies focus on soil environment manipulation. Proper liming to adjust soil pH and ensuring optimal irrigation practices can significantly reduce the establishment of these fungi. In severe cases, targeted soil treatments or the selection of alternative site preparation methods in nurseries are recommended to maintain nursery stock health.
