Eleutheromycosis is a fungal disease affecting various plant species, specifically trees, caused by the ascomycete genus Eleutheromyces. As a pathogen, it primarily colonizes the bark and woody tissues, acting as a parasite that exploits the physical and chemical vulnerabilities of its host plant.

The causative agent, Eleutheromyces subulatus, is a type of microfungi known for its ability to produce distinct reproductive structures. It functions by enzymatic degradation of host cells, slowly compromising the integrity of the tree's outer defensive layers. It is often found associated with older or stressed specimens.

The range of hosts includes several deciduous tree species. The infection usually targets areas where the bark has been damaged by environmental stress, frost cracks, or previous colonization by boring insects. Once established, the fungus can proliferate under the protective layers of the bark.

Symptoms include the appearance of small, distinct apothecia on the outer surface of the bark, which can be observed during humid seasons. Affected areas often show discoloration, bark necrosis, and in advanced stages, the separation of the bark from the cambium layer. This significantly hinders the tree's vascular transport system.

The spread of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture availability and moderate temperatures. Spores are dispersed through wind and rain splash, settling in new cracks or wounds on healthy trees. Management involves strict adherence to forest hygiene, pruning of affected limbs, and potentially using fungicidal treatments on localized infections to prevent further pathogen spread.
