Description

Elytroderma needle cast is a significant fungal disease affecting various pine species, primarily caused by the ascomycete fungus Elytroderma deformans. This pathogen is known for its ability to persist in host tissues, leading to chronic infections that weaken the health of the tree over time.

The fungus infects the needles and can move into the shoots and branches of the host tree. It produces apothecia on the needles, which serve as the source of inoculum. These spores are dispersed by wind and splashing rain, allowing the disease to spread rapidly within a stand or to nearby susceptible trees.

Key symptoms include the reddening and browning of needles, which eventually drop prematurely. A distinctive sign of Elytroderma infection is the presence of distorted, stunted branches and needle clusters, often referred to as «witches' brooms,» resulting from the fungus's impact on the tree's hormonal regulation.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by humidity and temperature. Periods of prolonged moisture during the spring and early summer facilitate spore germination and infection of the current year's needles. Dense, stagnant air environments are particularly conducive to the establishment of the pathogen.

Management strategies focus on sanitation and silvicultural practices. Reducing tree density to improve airflow, removing infected branches, and monitoring high-value stands are essential. In nurseries or high-value landscapes, applications of copper-based fungicides or other systemic treatments during the bud-break phase can mitigate impact.
