Elytroderma needle cast, caused by the fungus Elytroderma torres-juanii, is a significant pathology affecting various pine species. This fungal pathogen infects the needles and, in some cases, the twigs, leading to systemic stress and reduction in the overall vigor of the host tree.

The disease primarily impacts conifer stands, particularly pines. The pathogen is known for its ability to persist within the host tissue, causing chronic infections that can last for several years if not properly managed or if environmental conditions remain favorable for the fungus.

Symptoms of the infection typically include chlorotic spots that transition into distinct reddish-brown necrotic lesions on the needles. One of the most reliable diagnostic signs is the presence of small, dark, hysterothecial fruiting bodies of the fungus, which align along the rows of stomata on the needle surface.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination of the pathogen. High humidity levels and mild temperatures during the growing season facilitate the production and release of ascospores. These spores are then dispersed by wind and rain splashes, leading to new infections on healthy needles.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to minimize damage in both managed forests and nurseries. Key practices include monitoring for early signs of infection, pruning and destroying infested material, and ensuring proper site selection and spacing to promote good air circulation, which helps keep the foliage dry and limits fungal establishment.
