Description
Encoelia is a genus of fungi within the Ascomycota phylum that often acts as a necrotrophic pathogen on various woody plant species. By invading the bark and cambium, the fungus triggers tissue necrosis, which disrupts the transport systems of the tree and can lead to the decline of entire branches.
The host range for this pathogen includes several deciduous species, such as poplar (especially aspen), willow, birch, and oak. It primarily targets trees that are physiologically compromised due to environmental stress, poor site conditions, or damage caused by insects and mechanical injuries.
Symptoms of an Encoelia infection are characterized by localized lesions or cankers on the stems and branches. Over time, the bark in these areas may crack or sink. When humidity is high, small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, typically emerge from the dead bark, signaling the active phase of the fungus.
The development and spread of this disease are heavily dependent on moisture and temperature fluctuations. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and rain splashing onto susceptible entry points, such as bark fissures or pruning wounds. Prolonged damp weather during the growing season significantly increases the risk of infection.
Management of Encoelia is focused on integrated cultural practices rather than direct chemical control. Pruning out infected wood and ensuring proper sanitation in plantations is crucial. Maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and site management helps reduce susceptibility to the pathogen and promotes long-term forest health.
