Encoelia fimbriata is an ascomycete fungus recognized as a pathogen responsible for necrotic bark lesions and stem cankers on various deciduous trees. This disease impacts the cambium and bark layers, progressively compromising the tree's vascular system and leading to partial dieback or the eventual death of the affected host plant if the infection remains unchecked.
The fungus primarily targets hardwood species, with common hosts including trees within the Populus (poplar) and Salix (willow) genera. It is particularly prevalent in forest stands, nurseries, and plantations where trees are subjected to environmental stress. The pathogen acts as both a weak parasite and a saprotroph, often colonizing damaged or weakened woody tissue.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of sunken, darkened lesions on the bark surface. As the fungus matures, it produces characteristic reproductive structures known as apothecia. These fruiting bodies appear as small, cup-shaped growths with distinct fimbriated (fringed) edges, which emerge through the bark's epidermis, particularly during humid seasons.
The spread of Encoelia fimbriata is facilitated by environmental factors such as high atmospheric humidity and cool, damp weather conditions. The pathogen exploits entry points created by physical damage, such as frost cracks, pruning wounds, or insect galleries. Once established, the fungus rapidly colonizes the inner bark, producing spores that are disseminated via wind and rain splashing.
Management of this fungal disease relies heavily on preventative cultural practices. Regular monitoring of trees for early signs of bark necrosis is essential to facilitate early intervention. Infected limbs must be surgically removed and properly destroyed to prevent the buildup of fungal inoculum. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and minimizing mechanical damage are the most effective strategies to prevent outbreaks.
