Description

Encoelia furfuracea is a pathogenic fungus known to cause bark necrosis and cankers on various deciduous trees. It is classified as an ascomycete and acts as a parasitic organism that colonizes weakened tissues, often leading to the decline of host plants in forest ecosystems.

The primary host species for this pathogen is the alder (Alnus). While often occurring as a saprotroph on dead wood, it can transition to a parasitic role on stressed trees, specifically targeting the cambium layer and vascular tissues, which can cause localized tissue death or complete branch dieback.

The most visible diagnostic symptom is the presence of small, cup-shaped apothecia emerging through the bark of the host tree. These fruit bodies are typically light brown to dark brown and exhibit a scurfy or mealy texture on their outer surface. As they mature, the bark around the infection site often cracks and dies.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and rainfall. The fungus thrives in dense, poorly ventilated forest stands where the absence of proper sanitation allows spores to settle in existing wounds, bark cracks, or areas damaged by cold weather.

Effective management strategies center on forest hygiene and tree vigor. By removing infected limbs and harvesting severely affected trees, the inoculum load in the forest is significantly reduced. Ensuring appropriate planting density and protecting young trees from mechanical damage remain the most effective preventive steps against outbreaks.
