The biology of the pathogen revolves around its motile zoospores, which navigate aquatic environments using flagella. Once these spores locate a suitable host—specifically the surface of an egg—they encyst and penetrate the outer membrane. The fungus then develops a thallus that draws nutrients directly from the developing embryo, eventually killing it.
The primary clinical signs of infestation include the loss of the egg's natural transparency and the appearance of a whitish or greyish film on its surface.
