Larch endoconidiophorosis is a destructive fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Endoconidiophora laricicola. This pathogen belongs to the group of fungi known for colonizing the vascular tissues of woody plants. Its aggressive nature allows it to disrupt the flow of water and nutrients, which can lead to the rapid decline and eventual death of infected larch trees.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are trees of the genus Larix. The fungus typically gains entry into the tree through mechanical wounds in the bark or, more commonly, through tunnels created by bark beetles and other wood-boring insects. This creates a dangerous synergistic relationship where the insects facilitate the spread of the fungus while the weakened tree struggles to resist.

Symptoms of the infection include extensive bark necrosis, often accompanied by heavy resinosis (pitch flow) as the tree attempts to defend itself. Internally, the sapwood may show characteristic discoloration and fungal colonization patterns. Externally, the foliage may exhibit chlorosis, premature browning, and thinning, reflecting the reduced capacity of the vascular system to support the tree.

The development and spread of Endoconidiophora laricicola are highly dependent on environmental stressors and the presence of vectors. Periods of drought are particularly conducive to outbreaks, as they weaken the tree's defense mechanisms. The pathogen spreads through its spores, which can be dispersed by the wind, rainwater, and most significantly, by beetles moving between host trees.
