This organism functions in a symbiotic relationship with the spruce beetle, specifically Dendroctonus rufipennis, which acts as the primary vector, carrying the fungal spores into the inner bark and sapwood of host trees.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are various spruce species, particularly Engelmann spruce and white spruce. The fungus invades the xylem tissues, where it consumes stored nutrients and physically blocks the water-conducting vessels, effectively starving the tree of essential moisture and mineral delivery.

Symptoms of the infection include the characteristic blue-grey or black staining of the sapwood, which can be easily identified on freshly cut timber. In standing trees, symptoms manifest as premature needle chlorosis, rapid crown browning, and the presence of abundant boring dust around the base of the trunk, indicating recent beetle colonization.
