Endogonales is an order of zygomycete fungi that encompasses a range of organisms found in various soil types. In terms of agronomy, while some members are beneficial, others are associated with root damage and the development of plant diseases. The type of disease is primarily categorized as a root infection, which disrupts the physiological functioning of the plant's vascular system.
This group of fungi affects a wide variety of agricultural crops, including cereals, legumes, and several vegetable species. Susceptibility is often highest during the early seedling stages, where the root system is most vulnerable to colonization by pathogens. Under specific conditions, Endogonales can contribute to a complex of root-rotting organisms that reduce overall field performance.
Symptoms of infestation are identified by the discoloration and softening of the root tissue, often resulting in decay of the root cortex. Above ground, the disease manifests as stunted growth, chlorosis, and general wilting of the plants. In severe cases, the infected plants exhibit a diminished root structure, leading to reduced nutrient uptake and lodging of crops before the harvest season.
The development and spread of these fungi are strongly correlated with soil moisture levels and compaction. Poorly drained, waterlogged soils provide an ideal environment for spore dissemination. Furthermore, high nitrogen levels in the absence of balanced phosphorus and potassium can exacerbate the susceptibility of crops to these soil-borne fungal pathogens.
Management and preventative strategies include:
- Implementing rigorous crop rotation to break pathogen life cycles.
- Improving soil drainage and structure to avoid water accumulation.
- Using certified, fungicide-treated seeds to ensure healthy germination.
- Applying bio-fungicides to enhance the beneficial microbial population in the soil.
