Endoraecium is a genus of fungal microorganisms belonging to the Basidiomycota, which cause systemic lesions in various plant species, primarily from the Poaceae family. In phytopathology, this organism is classified as an obligate parasite closely tied to the host's life cycle, making disease management a complex challenge in intensive agricultural settings.

The primary causal agents of the disease are species of the Endoraecium fungus complex. These pathogens specialize in infecting plant tissues, penetrating them during the early stages of vegetation. Unlike many other rust or smut fungi, the life cycle of Endoraecium is characterized by its ability to persist within intercellular spaces of tissues without showing pronounced necrosis until the sporulation stage.

The main signs of infection include shoot deformation, leaf discoloration, and the formation of specific sporulation structures, which are often hidden inside plant tissues. At late stages, chlorosis and gradual wilting of the affected parts are observed. External symptoms may vary depending on the specific host plant species and the environmental conditions of the region.

The development and spread of Endoraecium are facilitated by high humidity and moderate temperatures during the active growth period of the crop. Infection is spread by spores, which are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, or through contaminated seeds. Favorable conditions allow the pathogen to quickly colonize new areas, creating a significant risk of epiphytotics.

The harmfulness of the disease lies in the substantial reduction of agricultural productivity. Affected plants lag in growth, exhibit decreased biomass, and produce lower grain quality, resulting in direct economic losses. In severe cases, the death of individual sections of fields leads to sparse canopy and the inability to achieve projected yield targets.
