Description
Chestnut blight is a lethal disease caused by the fungus Endothia parasitica, which leads to necrotic lesions on the bark of chestnut trees. This pathogen invades the cambium layer, effectively girdling the stem and branches, which prevents the transport of essential water and nutrients. The disease has historically devastated native chestnut populations across various regions.
While the primary host is the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), the pathogen can also infect various species of oaks and maples. The fungus enters the plant through wounds, natural cracks in the bark, or pruning scars, making tree health and maintenance critical factors in the susceptibility of a specific plantation or individual tree.
Clinical signs of the infection include sunken, discolored patches on the bark that eventually rupture. During moist periods, characteristic orange-colored spore-producing structures known as stroma appear on the infected areas. Infected branches often show flagging, where leaves turn yellow or brown and wither, eventually leading to the death of the entire canopy above the lesion.
The spread of the disease is heavily facilitated by high humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures, which support the rapid production and dissemination of spores. These spores are easily carried by wind, splashing rain, insects, and even birds, allowing the fungus to colonize nearby trees quickly. Lack of sanitation in orchards or forests dramatically accelerates the spread.
Effective disease management focuses on prevention and rigorous sanitation practices. Key strategies include:
- Pruning and removing infected branches or entire trees to reduce inoculum levels.
- Sterilizing all pruning tools between trees to prevent cross-contamination.
- Protecting wounds and pruning cuts with suitable fungicidal pastes or protectants.
- Selecting and breeding for blight-resistant cultivars to restore healthy tree populations.
