Chestnut blight, caused by the fungus Endothia chinensis, is a devastating disease that affects various chestnut species, particularly the sweet chestnut. This fungal pathogen infects the tree through wounds in the bark, eventually colonizing the cambium and xylem, which disrupts the flow of nutrients and water throughout the plant.

The primary host for this pathogen is the chestnut tree, although it can impact several species within the Castanea genus. The disease poses a major threat to both natural forests and cultivated orchards, leading to significant loss of timber production and nut yields, and causing long-term damage to ecosystems where these trees are keystone species.

Early symptoms of infection include the appearance of reddish-brown or orange, sunken lesions on the bark. As the fungus progresses, these lesions expand into cankers, which often cause the bark to crack and peel. Eventually, the infection girdles the branch or trunk, leading to leaf wilting, canopy dieback, and the presence of characteristic orange fungal fruiting bodies on the bark surface.

The development and spread of Endothia chinensis are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores that are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and movement of insects or birds. Any mechanical injury to the tree bark serves as an entry point for the fungal spores to initiate an infection.

To mitigate the impact of chestnut blight, a comprehensive management strategy is essential. This includes strict phytosanitary measures such as removing and destroying infected tree parts, sanitizing pruning tools with alcohol or bleach, and applying wound dressings to trees. Breeding and planting disease-resistant cultivars are considered the most sustainable methods for long-term control.
