Description
Endoxyla is a genus of moths belonging to the Cossidae family, commonly referred to as wood moths or goat moths. While often perceived as a disease due to the systemic decline of the tree, it is technically an insect pest whose larvae function as wood-boring agents, creating tunnels within the xylem and phloem layers.
These pests primarily target woody species, including Eucalypts, Acacias, and various ornamental trees. The larvae are notorious for their wood-boring behavior, which physically destroys the structural integrity of the trunks and major branches, eventually leading to branch dieback or total tree death if left untreated.
Key symptoms include small, clean holes in the bark often accompanied by piles of frass (wood shavings mixed with waste) at the base of the tree or stuck to the trunk. Furthermore, crown thinning, yellowing foliage, and structural cracks in the bark are indicative of advanced larval feeding and secondary infection infiltration.
The life cycle is influenced by environmental temperature and host tree vigor. Endoxyla moths prefer trees that are stressed, often by drought or soil compaction, making them more susceptible to infestation. Adult moths emerge for mating, and females deposit eggs into cracks or fissures in the bark, where larvae eventually bore in.
Effective management strategies should focus on an integrated approach:
- Regular inspection of bark and trunk surfaces during the growing season.
- Manual removal or localized injection of approved systemic insecticides into entry holes.
- Pruning and destroying severely infested branches to lower population density.
- Improving site conditions such as irrigation and soil aeration to boost tree vigor.
- Monitoring flights using pheromone traps to time preventative treatments.
