Description

Englerula is a genus of ascomycete fungi that act as causative agents for specific plant diseases. These microorganisms are primarily superficial parasites that form colonies on leaves and young shoots, thriving in environments with high humidity and temperate to tropical climates.

Typical hosts for the Englerula genus include various woody plants and shrubs, including ornamental species and some fruit-bearing crops. The pathogen infects leaf blades, obstructing photosynthesis and disrupting the physiological balance of the host plant, which can lead to stunted growth.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as dark, velvety, or sooty coatings on the upper side of the leaves. Unlike many other leaf spots, the mycelium of Englerula develops primarily epiphytically, creating dense networks that gradually cover large areas of the foliage, resulting in chlorosis and premature leaf drop.

The development of the fungus is encouraged by high humidity, prolonged fog, and moderate temperatures. Pathogen spores are spread by rain splashes, wind, and insect pests, which weaken the plant's immune system, making it easier for the fungus to colonize the plant tissue. In greenhouses or dense plantations, the risk of outbreaks increases significantly.

Management strategies include sanitary pruning of affected branches, thinning of crowns to improve aeration, and the application of copper-based or systemic fungicides at the first sign of infestation. Prevention is centered on maintaining proper humidity levels and controlling insect pests that damage the plant epidermis.
