The Englerulaceae family represents a group of fungi within the order Capnodiales that primarily act as plant pathogens. These fungi are characterized by their epiphytic habit, where they form dark mycelial mats on the surface of plant organs. Unlike systemic pathogens, they mostly colonize the epidermal layer, utilizing the surface area of leaves, stems, and fruits as their primary site for growth and reproduction.
The primary symptom of an Englerulaceae infection is the development of a black or dark-colored fungal crust on the surface of leaves. This coating can significantly impede the plant's physiological functions by blocking stomata and reducing the amount of sunlight that reaches the leaf tissues. Consequently, the affected plants often show signs of chlorosis, stunted growth, and premature leaf senescence, which negatively impacts the overall yield.
Various woody plants, shrubs, and certain tropical crops are susceptible to these fungi. The pathogens often thrive in ecosystems where high humidity levels are maintained for extended periods. The dispersal of fungal spores is typically facilitated by rain splashes, wind currents, and mechanical transport by insects, especially those that secrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for the fungus to establish itself.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the outbreak of this disease. High atmospheric humidity, limited air circulation, and warm temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and mycelial spread. Dense plantings and improper canopy management are significant risk factors that allow the disease to progress rapidly through an orchard or a nursery, potentially causing substantial economic damage.
To mitigate the impact of Englerulaceae, a combination of cultural and chemical strategies should be implemented. Key management practices include:
- Improving ventilation through regular pruning to reduce canopy density.
- Controlling sucking insects that damage leaf cuticles and provide growth substrates.
