Entodesmium blight is a plant disease caused by the fungal pathogen Entodesmium rude. This fungus is recognized as an ascomycete that primarily colonizes cereal crops, disrupting normal physiological processes and causing localized necrosis on the foliage and stems of host plants.
The disease affects a variety of cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye. It is primarily observed on leaves and leaf sheaths, where the pathogen establishes itself and initiates the degradation of cell walls to acquire nutrients, which manifests as typical leaf spot symptoms in the affected areas.
Initial symptoms include the appearance of small, discolored spots that gradually enlarge into brownish lesions. A diagnostic characteristic of the disease is the development of minute black structures known as perithecia, which emerge on the necrotic tissue, signaling the reproductive phase of the fungus and the potential for widespread spore dispersal.
The spread of Entodesmium rude is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain-splash and wind currents facilitate the movement of inoculum from infected crop debris to healthy plant tissue, making the management of field residue critical for disease control.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy to minimize pathogen survival and spread. Essential practices include rotating crops to break the disease cycle, deep plowing to bury infested stubble, and the timely application of fungicides during the vegetative growth stages to protect the upper canopy, which is vital for grain filling and final yield formation.
