Entoleuca is a genus of fungi containing species that cause significant diseases in various woody plants. The most prominent pathogen, Entoleuca mammata, is responsible for the hypoxylon canker, a devastating disease primarily affecting species of the genus Populus (poplar and aspen). This fungus is a necrotrophic pathogen that invades the host tissues, secreting enzymes that break down cell walls and facilitate its colonization.

This disease targets a wide range of forest trees, often impacting plantations and natural stands. The fungus is particularly damaging in temperate regions where moisture levels and temperature fluctuations support the life cycle of the pathogen. Once established, the fungus can rapidly cause structural decay, leading to significant economic losses in timber production and environmental degradation.

Symptoms of Entoleuca infection are often clearly visible on the bark of infected trees. The disease manifests as sunken, necrotic lesions that gradually expand. Key visual signs include:

  • Darkened or blackened bark patches on branches and main stems.
  • Development of fruiting bodies (stromata) breaking through the bark.
  • Bark cracking and peeling around the canker site.
  • Wilting of leaves and sudden flagging of branches.
  • Formation of galls or cankers that compromise the structural integrity of the tree.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors. High relative humidity and rainfall facilitate the dispersal of ascospores and conidia, which spread the infection to new hosts. The fungus gains entry through wounds, insect galleries, or natural fissures in the bark. Trees that are stressed due to drought, overcrowding, or poor soil conditions are significantly more susceptible to infection.

Managing Entoleuca requires an integrated approach to plant health. There are no systemic fungicides that can effectively cure deep-seated infections in mature trees, making prevention the primary strategy. This includes selecting resistant cultivars, implementing strict sanitation practices (removing and destroying diseased material), and maintaining tree vigor through proper silvicultural practices. Reducing mechanical damage to tree trunks during routine maintenance is also essential to prevent pathogen entry.
