Entoloma is a genus of fungi that includes species capable of causing physiological stress and tissue decay in various plants. While often recognized in mycology for their diverse roles in ecosystems, in agricultural settings, certain Entoloma species can act as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the health of root systems and weaken plant vigor.

The disease is caused by basidiomycete fungi that typically colonize the rhizosphere. These fungi act as facultative parasites, meaning they are primarily soil-dwelling decomposers that shift their behavior to parasitic attack when plant tissues are weakened by environmental stress, mechanical injury, or excessive moisture that restricts root oxygen intake.

Crops susceptible to this type of infection primarily include perennial berries, nursery stock, and various ornamental species. The pathogen specifically targets the vascular tissue and cortex of roots, disrupting the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and water effectively. This leads to a gradual decline in the health of the host plant.

Symptoms of Entoloma infection include unexpected chlorosis, wilting during peak sunlight, and stunted overall growth. Upon closer examination of the root system, one can observe brown lesions, softened root bark, and occasionally, the presence of mycelial mats near the root collar. In some cases, the soil around the base of the plant may emit a musty fungal odor.

Environmental conditions such as waterlogged soils, poor drainage, and low soil pH are primary drivers for the development and spread of the fungus. Effective management strategies involve improving soil structure and drainage, applying balanced fertilization to strengthen plant resilience, and utilizing biological control agents like Trichoderma species to prevent the establishment of the pathogen in the root zone.
