The Entolomataceae family comprises a diverse group of gilled fungi. While primarily saprotrophic, in agricultural environments, these fungi can act as opportunistic organisms that affect the rhizosphere of crops. The causative agents are basidiomycetes that thrive in moist, organic-rich environments. The disease mechanism typically involves the colonization of the soil near root zones, where fungal mycelium can outcompete beneficial flora for nutrients.
