Entomophthora is a genus of fungi within the order Entomophthorales that function as potent entomopathogens. Unlike traditional plant diseases, these organisms are beneficial to agriculture because they infect and kill insect pests, such as aphids, mites, and various beetles, effectively reducing their impact on crops.

The causative agents are specialized fungi that complete their life cycle inside the insect host. Once the fungal spores adhere to the insect cuticle, they germinate and penetrate the host's body. The fungus then proliferates, consuming the insect's internal tissues while the host is still alive or shortly after infection begins.

Symptoms of an Entomophthora infection include erratic behavior, cessation of feeding, and eventually death. A key diagnostic sign is the host often being found fixed to the plant surface in an elevated position. When these conditions are met, the fungus can cause localized epizootics that drastically reduce pest populations, often acting faster and more efficiently than certain chemical pesticide applications.

Agronomists should aim to minimize the application of broad-spectrum fungicides that could inhibit these beneficial fungi.
