The family Entomophthoraceae consists of specialized entomopathogenic fungi that act as crucial natural enemies of various insect pests. Unlike fungi that cause plant diseases, these organisms are beneficial to agriculture as they function as biological control agents, significantly suppressing the populations of aphids, mites, flies, and other harmful arthropods in field and greenhouse crops.

These fungi act as obligate parasites. Their life cycle begins when spores land on the insect cuticle. Through enzymatic action and physical pressure, the fungal hyphae penetrate the host's body. Once inside, the fungus consumes the internal tissues, ultimately killing the host. This process is highly effective and specific, often resulting in rapid population crashes of the target pests.

Symptoms of fungal infection in pests are distinct. Infected insects often exhibit altered behavior, such as moving to the upper parts of plants before death. After the insect dies, a visible layer of fungal spores, known as conidia, typically covers the carcass. This appearance is a hallmark sign that the pathogen is actively spreading within the insect population.

High relative humidity and moderate temperatures provide the necessary environment for spores to germinate and spread via wind or direct contact. Consequently, natural outbreaks of these fungi are most common during periods of high precipitation and mild weather.

Strategies for leveraging these fungi include the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) practices. To protect and encourage these beneficial fungi, farmers should avoid the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum chemical insecticides that kill both pests and their natural enemies. Maintaining buffer zones and preserving biodiversity within the landscape helps ensure the long-term sustainability of these effective natural biological control agents.
