Description
The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Entophlyctis cienkowskiana, which belongs to the chytrid family. This microscopic organism acts as an endobiotic parasite, invading the cells of its host to extract essential nutrients, which results in the disruption of the host's normal physiological and metabolic processes.
The pathogen primarily affects aquatic plants and various species of filamentous algae. In modern agricultural systems, such as hydroponics or aquaculture, this fungus can become a significant nuisance if the water quality is not properly managed, as it targets the foundational microorganisms that form the ecosystem of the aquatic medium.
Typical symptoms of infection include chlorosis, growth stunting, and visible morphological changes in the host's tissue. Upon close inspection, the appearance of small swellings or pustules is noted, which serve as the development sites for the fungus's zoospores before they are released into the water column.
Development and spread are facilitated by environmental conditions that favor zoospore motility. A warm temperature and constant immersion in water are critical factors for the rapid spread of the disease. Once the zoospores are released, they move actively through the water to colonize new healthy tissues, making the disease highly contagious in closed systems.
