Entorrhiza is a genus of basidiomycetous fungi that cause distinctive gall formations on the roots of host plants. Unlike many surface-dwelling fungi, this pathogen operates as an obligate endophyte, completing its life cycle deep within the root tissues, which poses significant challenges for traditional scouting and visual identification methods.
The causative agents belong to the order Entorrhizales. The disease is characterized by the formation of root galls or tumors, where the fungus matures and produces teliospores. This development alters the plant's normal hormonal balance, redirecting the host's energy towards maintaining the parasite's infrastructure rather than growth and yield development.
Plants belonging to the families Cyperaceae and Juncaceae are the most common hosts. While these plants are often considered wild species, their proximity to agricultural fields allows the fungus to persist in the ecosystem, potentially serving as a reservoir for infection that can impact soil health and adjacent cultivated crops.
Key symptoms include hypertrophy of root tissues, visible as knobby galls. Internally, the affected tissue may show discoloration and necrotic spots. Above ground, the disease often manifests as general chlorosis, stunted growth, and a reduction in overall vigor, which are frequently misidentified as nutrient deficiencies or water stress by growers.
Management and prevention focus heavily on reducing the inoculum density in the soil. Key strategies include practicing long-term crop rotation to limit the host availability, maintaining optimal soil drainage, and preventing the spread of infested soil between fields via agricultural machinery. Controlling weed species within the Cyperaceae family is also vital for breaking the disease cycle and protecting crop health in sensitive areas.
