Entorrhiza cypericola is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Entorrhizales. This basidiomycete is known for causing root-galling diseases specifically in plants of the Cyperaceae family, most notably those within the Cyperus genus.

The pathogenesis involves the colonization of the root cortex by the fungal mycelium. This interaction triggers an abnormal physiological response in the host plant, resulting in hyperplasia. Consequently, distinct galls or swellings develop on the root system, which serve as the primary site for fungal reproduction and teliospore formation.

Symptoms are largely restricted to the underground parts of the plant. Infected roots exhibit localized hypertrophy, appearing as nodules or small tumors. Above-ground symptoms are often subtle, manifesting as stunted growth, reduced vigor, or chlorosis, resulting from the compromised nutrient and water uptake capabilities of the distorted root system.
