Entorrhizales represents a unique order of basidiomycete fungi that function as obligate endophytes in plant roots. Unlike traditional pathogens that may affect stems or leaves, these fungi focus their life cycle entirely within the root architecture, resulting in morphological changes that fundamentally alter the plant's ability to maintain homeostasis.
The primary hosts affected by this fungal order belong to the families Cyperaceae and Juncaceae. By establishing an intracellular relationship with root cortex cells, the fungus induces the formation of galls — abnormal tissue growth. These galls serve as protected environments for the fungus to develop its teliospores, ensuring the survival of the pathogen across seasons.
Symptoms of Entorrhizales infection are primarily underground, characterized by the development of nodules or tumor-like growths on the root system. Above-ground symptoms are secondary, including stunted growth, premature yellowing, and decreased vigor.
