The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Entyloma achilleae, a member of the smut fungi family. This pathogen primarily attacks the foliage of its host plant, leading to necrotic spots and a significant reduction in photosynthetic efficiency. The pathogen survives the winter months primarily as teliospores, residing on plant debris, which serves as a primary source of inoculum for the upcoming growing season.
The primary host for this disease is the common yarrow (Achillea millefolium). While often considered a medicinal or ornamental plant, it is susceptible to this fungal infection, especially when cultivated in large monocultures.
