Description

Entyloma ageratinae is a species of smut fungus that serves as a highly specialized pathogen causing white leaf spot disease. It primarily targets plants within the Ageratina genus, most notably the invasive weed Ageratina adenophora (crofton weed). Because of its specificity, this fungus does not pose a threat to common commercial crops.

The visual signs of the disease are characterized by the emergence of light-colored, chlorotic lesions on the upper surface of leaves. Correspondingly, on the underside of the leaf, a white, felt-like layer develops, consisting of the fungus's conidia. In severe cases of infestation, the affected tissue dies and falls out, leaving small, distinct holes in the leaf lamina.

The development of the fungus is strictly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spore production and dissemination occur most rapidly during cool, humid conditions and periods of high rainfall. Water droplets on leaf surfaces act as a medium for the germination of spores, facilitating rapid infection spread within a plant canopy.

From an agronomic perspective, Entyloma ageratinae is viewed as a beneficial biological control agent. By inducing severe leaf spot disease, it restricts the growth, development, and competitive ability of the invasive Ageratina adenophora. This natural suppression reduces the cost and environmental impact associated with chemical weed control strategies.

  • Regular field scouting to evaluate the level of infection.
