Description

White leaf spot, caused by the fungus Entyloma australe, is a significant infectious disease affecting various species of the Physalis genus. As a member of the smut fungi group, this pathogen is well-adapted to surviving within the host tissues of the Solanaceae family, often leading to chronic infestations in both commercial and home gardens.

The disease primarily impacts various physalis cultivars, including ground cherries and tomatillos. While the fungus is highly host-specific, it can persist on perennial weed species within the same botanical family, making these weeds critical reservoirs for disease transmission during the growing season.

Clinical symptoms appear as distinct leaf spots that are initially pale green or yellowish. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, become necrotic, and develop a white or greyish-white color, often with a darker halo. In severe cases, the infected leaves lose photosynthetic capacity, turn brown, and drop prematurely, which significantly weakens the host plant.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the spread of Entyloma australe. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the necessary conditions for spore germination and colonization. Water splash, overhead irrigation, and high-density planting exacerbate the spread by facilitating the movement of spores from the soil or lower leaves to the upper canopy.

The economic impact is manifested through reduced fruit set and lower quality yields due to premature defoliation. To effectively manage and prevent the spread of the pathogen, growers should implement the following strategy:

  • implementing a crop rotation schedule that avoids solanaceous crops for at least three years;
  • thorough removal and destruction of crop debris after the harvest season;
  • maintaining proper spacing between plants to enhance air circulation;
  • controlling weeds that belong to the nightshade family;
  • applying preventative fungicide treatments when environmental conditions favor disease development.
