The disease is caused by the fungus Entyloma cosmi, a member of the smut fungi group. This pathogen is a specialized parasite that targets plants of the genus Cosmos. It invades the leaf tissue, where it completes its life cycle, drawing nutrients from the host and causing visible pathological changes in the plant's foliage.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are various species of cosmos, particularly Cosmos bipinnatus. The fungus affects the leaves, leading to the development of necrotic or chlorotic spots. While it is primarily a foliage disease, under severe infection pressure, the pathogen can weaken the entire plant, leading to a significant loss of photosynthetic surface area.

Early symptoms include the appearance of small, pale or yellowish spots on the leaves, which may later turn grayish or brown as the tissue dies. Upon close inspection, the undersides of the leaves often reveal the presence of fungal spores, which appear as a fine dust or dense, sunken patches. As the disease advances, these spots may coalesce, eventually causing the entire leaf to wither and drop prematurely.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Entyloma cosmi. The fungus thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity. Inadequate airflow, often caused by overly dense planting or improper garden maintenance, provides the perfect microclimate for spore germination and spread. Rain and overhead irrigation are major factors that facilitate the mechanical transfer of spores between plants.

The economic and aesthetic impact of this disease is significant, as it drastically reduces the vitality and floral display of the cosmos. To protect plants, gardeners should focus on cultural practices: providing adequate spacing between plants to ensure airflow, removing affected leaves promptly, and cleaning up garden debris at the end of the season.
