Entyloma ficariae is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the smut group (Basidiomycota) that primarily affects plants of the genus Ficaria. Unlike typical cereal smuts, this pathogen manifests as localized leaf spots, which can lead to significant aesthetic and physiological degradation of the host plant foliage.

The primary host for this fungus is the lesser celandine (Ficaria verna). In environments where this plant thrives, the fungus can become highly prevalent during the early spring months. The infection is host-specific, meaning it primarily circulates within populations of celandine and related Ranunculaceae species.

Symptoms begin as small, pale or yellowish spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often turning brown, tan, or grey. On the underside of the leaves, the fungus produces clusters of teliospores, appearing as minute pustules. These structures are essential for the survival and dispersal of the pathogen during the growing season.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The spores overwinter in the soil or on infected plant debris, remaining dormant until the favorable conditions of the next spring stimulate germination and subsequent infection of new leaf tissues.

Management of Entyloma ficariae focuses on sanitation and environmental control. Key preventative measures include:

  • Removing and destroying infected plant material at the end of the season.
  • Improving air circulation around garden beds to reduce moisture levels.
  • Preventing overcrowding, which helps lower humidity within the plant canopy.
