Eoterfezia (Latin: Eoterfezia) is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. In agricultural science, it is recognized as a causative agent of specific fungal infections that primarily attack the subterranean and basal parts of crops. While not as common as other soil-borne pathogens, its ability to persist in diverse soil environments makes it a significant concern for specialized agriculture and field crop production.

The pathogen responsible for the disease is the Eoterfezia fungus. This is classified as a root-infecting disease that disrupts the vascular functions of the host plant. The fungus primarily invades the root cortex, eventually spreading towards the collar region. This damage leads to systemic stress, as the plant becomes unable to efficiently transport water and essential nutrients from the soil to the leaves and developing fruits.

The range of affected crops typically includes species sensitive to rhizosphere disturbances and specific soil pH levels. High-value horticultural crops and certain legumes are frequently susceptible to this infection. If a plant is pulled from the ground, the lack of healthy, white root tips serves as a primary diagnostic sign.

Environmental conditions conducive to the spread of Eoterfezia include poorly drained soils, prolonged periods of high humidity, and suboptimal soil temperatures. Prevention and control strategies must focus on cultural practices: maintaining optimal soil aeration, implementing long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen's lifecycle, and utilizing fungicide treatments if the infection is detected early. Soil sterilization or the use of resistant plant varieties remains the gold standard for long-term management in heavily infested fields.
