Eoterfezia parasitica is a specialized mycoparasitic fungus that primarily infects truffles (genus Tuber). As an ascomycete, it acts as a significant pathogen within truffle plantations, causing substantial economic losses by destroying the fruiting bodies of these high-value edible fungi.
The pathogen functions by invading the tissue of the developing truffle. It secretes enzymes that break down the host's cells, effectively feeding on the organic matter that the truffle would otherwise use to grow and mature. This invasion fundamentally alters the chemical and physical composition of the fungus, rendering it unmarketable.
Symptoms of the infection typically include a loss of firmness in the truffle, leading to a "mushy" texture. Affected specimens often exhibit discoloration, becoming dark or gray, and develop a characteristic unpleasant or pungent odor. In advanced stages, the fungus may cover the truffle surface with a layer of mycelial growth and fungal spores.
The spread of Eoterfezia parasitica is largely dependent on environmental factors, specifically high soil moisture and poor drainage. These conditions provide an ideal habitat for the rapid germination and colonization of the parasite. Disturbance of the soil and the use of contaminated tools are primary vectors for the pathogen’s transmission across the plantation site.
Integrated management is essential to mitigate the impact of this disease. Farmers should prioritize soil management to prevent water stagnation and ensure optimal aeration. Regular monitoring for signs of infection is critical; once found, diseased truffles must be harvested and disposed of carefully to prevent the spread of spores. Maintaining the overall vitality of the plantation's mycorrhizal network is the most effective long-term preventative measure.
