Description
Eoterfeziaceae is a family of ascomycete fungi that includes several plant pathogens capable of causing significant tissue degradation in various agricultural crops. These fungi primarily act as root pathogens, attacking the rhizosphere and vascular system of host plants, which makes them difficult to identify before significant damage to the crop has already occurred.
The primary victims of this disease include a variety of vegetable crops and certain grains that are highly susceptible to soil-borne fungal infections. By attacking the root zone, the pathogen disrupts the plant's ability to absorb water and essential minerals, leading to a systemic decline in physiological performance and stunted overall growth.
Symptoms of an Eoterfeziaceae infection typically manifest as gradual wilting of the leaves, even when soil moisture appears adequate. As the disease progresses, the plant’s foliage may turn yellow and eventually die back. An examination of the root system often reveals necrotic lesions, soft texture of the roots, and a noticeable darkening of the root tissue.
Development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on environmental conditions. High soil moisture and moderate temperatures, ranging from 18°C to 25°C, are optimal for spore germination and colonization of the roots. Poor drainage and compacted soils further exacerbate the issue by creating a stress environment that facilitates the rapid spread of the mycelium.
The damage caused by these pathogens can lead to severe crop yield losses, often ranging from 20% to 50% depending on the severity of the infection. Effective management strategies for control and prevention include:
- Strict adherence to crop rotation cycles to starve the pathogen.
- Seed treatment with systemic fungicides to protect seedlings during the early stages.
- Proper soil cultivation practices to ensure adequate aeration and drainage.
- Implementation of biological control agents, such as beneficial soil microbes.
