Ephebe is a genus of fungi often categorized within lichen-forming fungi. From an agronomic perspective, it acts as a potential pathogen or aggressive epiphyte that colonizes the surfaces of various plants. In moist environments, this organism can form dense mats on plant stems and leaves, causing significant physiological stress to the host and potentially leading to localized necrosis.
The causative agent belongs to the Lichinomycetes class. It develops a filamentous structure that tightly attaches to the plant cuticle. This interaction is primarily parasitic, as the fungus intercepts light, moisture, and essential nutrients intended for the host plant. By blocking stomata, the pathogen disrupts the plant's natural respiration and photosynthetic processes, leading to reduced vigor.
The disease primarily affects perennial plants, mosses, and the bark of young trees in nurseries located near humid forest areas. Symptoms appear as dark, brownish-black, hair-like growths covering the foliage or stems. The fungus thrives in stagnant, humid environments where moisture lingers on plant surfaces for extended periods.
