Epicoccum camelliae blight is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Epicoccum camelliae. This fungus primarily targets species within the Camellia genus, causing significant foliar damage and aesthetic loss, particularly in greenhouse environments or humid geographical regions where environmental conditions favor fungal growth.
The host range is predominantly focused on ornamental camellias. While the fungus is often opportunistic, it can cause severe outbreaks in crowded nurseries or collections where plant stress and high humidity create an ideal microclimate for the pathogen to thrive and colonize host tissues, especially on older or wounded leaves.
Symptoms initially appear as small, chlorotic or light brown spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, darken into necrotic areas, and often develop a visible layer of fungal spores. The presence of a yellowish halo surrounding the dark lesions is a diagnostic feature of this particular blight.
The development and spread of Epicoccum camelliae are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity (exceeding 70%), poor air circulation, and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C are optimal for spore germination. Spores are primarily dispersed through splashing water, contaminated tools, or air currents within confined growing spaces.
Management and prevention of this disease require a systematic approach:
- Maintaining proper spacing between plants to improve airflow.
- Reducing leaf wetness by avoiding overhead irrigation.
- Prompt sanitation, including the removal and disposal of infected leaves and debris.
- Application of protective fungicides during periods of high disease pressure to inhibit fungal colonization.
