Epicoccum dendrobii is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing specific leaf spot diseases, primarily affecting orchid species such as Dendrobium. As an opportunistic fungus, it thrives on weakening plant tissue, leading to necrosis and premature leaf senescence. Recognizing the pathogen is critical for nursery managers and home growers alike to maintain the health of orchid collections.

The host range is predominantly limited to the Orchidaceae family, with Dendrobium varieties being the most frequent targets. Under unfavorable conditions, the pathogen can spread rapidly, infecting multiple parts of the plant, including pseudobulbs in some cases. While it rarely results in immediate plant mortality, the aesthetic and physiological damage significantly impairs the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and thrive.

Typical symptoms manifest as small, brown or reddish-brown lesions on the foliage. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge, often developing a necrotic center where small, dark spore-bearing structures known as sporodochia become visible to the naked eye. A characteristic yellow halo often surrounds the necrotic spot, indicating the plant's stress response to the invading fungal mycelium.

Development and spread of Epicoccum dendrobii are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity, exceeding 70-75%, combined with stagnant air, provides the optimal conditions for spore germination and colonization. In greenhouse environments, excessive moisture accumulation on leaves following watering is the primary vector for disease transmission, allowing spores to penetrate plant tissue effectively.

Effective disease management relies on both preventative agronomic practices and reactive chemical intervention. To mitigate the risk of infection, growers should follow these protocols:

  • Ensure proper spacing between plants to maximize airflow and reduce humidity around the leaves.
  • Immediately remove and destroy symptomatic leaves to reduce the source of inoculum.
  • Utilize systemic fungicides approved for ornamental plants when local outbreaks occur.
  • Avoid overhead watering during humid periods to prevent standing water on leaf surfaces.
  • Maintain stringent sanitation standards for all pruning tools and cultivation areas.
