While they are not typically considered primary destructive pathogens, their presence indicates environmental conditions that favor fungal growth, which can impact the overall health of ornamental and fruit crops.

The disease is caused by microscopic fungi that utilize plant surfaces as a substrate for growth. These fungi often form symbiotic or parasitic relationships, depending on the specific environmental conditions and the host plant's immunity. The infection usually remains on the outer layers, yet consistent exposure to the fungus can lead to metabolic stress in the host plant over time.
