Epithele is a genus of basidiomycete fungi recognized in agronomy and forestry as a causative agent of wood-rotting diseases. These fungi typically target the bark and inner wood of trees, disrupting essential biological functions and contributing to the gradual decay of woody tissues.
The disease is classified as a type of stem decay and necrosis. The pathogen thrives by colonizing the plant's structural tissues, breaking down wood fibers and depriving the tree of its mechanical integrity. Infection primarily occurs through open wounds, cracks in the bark, or pruning scars that have not been properly sealed.
A wide range of deciduous and coniferous trees can be affected by Epithele. It is particularly prevalent in environments where trees are already stressed or compromised by age, environmental factors, or poor silvicultural practices. The fungus exploits these weaknesses, turning the plant into a site for its continuous colonization.
Identification of the disease relies on observing specific symptoms, most notably the presence of fungal fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches. These appear as thin, crust-like or membrane-like structures. Internally, the wood undergoes discoloration and softening, which significantly weakens the structural stability of the affected tree.
The progression of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture levels. High humidity, heavy precipitation, and insufficient air circulation in dense forest stands or poorly maintained orchards create ideal conditions for spore germination and spread. The damage caused by Epithele is severe, leading to reduced growth, branch dieback, and eventually the death of the host plant.
Prevention and control strategies focus on sanitation and physical protection. It is critical to remove and dispose of infected wood to stop the spread of spores. Pruning cuts should be clean and treated with protective wound dressings to prevent the entry of pathogens. Maintaining general tree health through proper fertilization and watering is also essential for natural resistance.
