Eremomycosis is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Eremomyces bilateralis. Although not as widely documented as other leaf spot diseases, it poses a specific risk to vulnerable plant species by colonizing epidermal tissues and disrupting normal physiological processes within the host plant.
The causal agent, Eremomyces bilateralis, is an ascomycete fungus. It functions as a parasitic organism that thrives on the cuticle and epidermis of its host. The infection type is characterized as a progressive necrotrophic lesion development, where the fungus extracts nutrients from the decaying plant cells.
Symptoms initially appear as small, subtle spots on the foliage, which eventually enlarge and become necrotic. In advanced stages of the disease, the infected tissue may exhibit tissue collapse and discoloration. The appearance of these spots is often accompanied by a reduction in plant vigor, stunted growth, and premature leaf drop.
The development and spread of Eremomyces bilateralis are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. The fungus favors humid environments where moisture films persist on leaf surfaces for extended periods. Spores are primarily disseminated via wind, water splashes, and physical contact between infected and healthy tissues.
