Grey eriopezia (Eriopezia caesia) is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division, known primarily for its presence on the bark of various hardwood tree species. It acts as a saprotroph or a weak parasite, often colonizing tissues that have been damaged by environmental stressors, physiological imbalance, or mechanical injury.
The characteristic symptoms of this fungus involve the formation of small, disk-shaped apothecia. These fruiting bodies are typically grey, blue-grey, or ash-colored, appearing in dense clusters on the surface of dead or dying bark. In later stages, the bark may exhibit visible signs of necrosis, discoloration, and eventual peeling, revealing the decaying layers beneath.
The development of Eriopezia caesia is heavily dependent on microclimatic conditions, specifically high relative humidity and consistent moisture levels. The fungal spores disseminate via air currents and rainfall, germinating on sites where the tree's natural defense mechanisms are compromised. It thrives in locations with poor air circulation and dense canopy cover, which retain moisture for prolonged periods.
The impact of this pathogen on plant health is gradual rather than catastrophic. By consuming nutrients from the bark and interrupting the movement of sap, the fungus weakens the host tree. This depletion of vitality makes the tree significantly more susceptible to secondary infections from more aggressive decay-causing fungi, as well as infestation by wood-boring insects.
Effective control measures focus on preventive arboriculture. Management strategies include the removal of infected branches to reduce spore load, proper wound dressing after pruning, and maintaining tree vigor through adequate watering and nutrient management. Applying copper-based fungicides to affected areas can help prevent the spread of the pathogen, provided that the initial cause of tissue weakness is also addressed.
