Description
Pathogen and disease type. Powdery mildew is caused by fungi belonging to the order Erysiphales. These organisms are obligate biotrophs that grow primarily on the surface of plant tissues. They develop a white mycelium on the leaves, stems, and flowers, penetrating the host's epidermal cells with structures known as haustoria to extract essential nutrients.
Host range. Erysiphales are known for their broad host range, affecting a vast array of agricultural and horticultural crops. Major targets include cereals (wheat, barley), fruit trees, grapevines, various vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes, and numerous ornamental flowers. Each species tends to be host-specific, yet collectively they represent a major threat to global agriculture.
Symptoms and signs. The disease is easily identified by the appearance of white, powdery, dust-like spots or patches on the leaves. As the infection progresses, the mycelial mat may become thicker, turning grayish or brownish. Black, pinpoint-sized fruiting bodies called cleistothecia often emerge within the white mycelium towards the end of the growing season, acting as overwintering structures.
Development conditions and impact. Development is favored by fluctuating humidity levels, moderate temperatures, and lack of air circulation in dense canopies. High nitrogen levels in the soil can also increase susceptibility. The damage includes stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, premature senescence, and significant yield loss, as the infected plants cannot maintain normal photosynthetic activity.
Management and control. Successful control requires a multifaceted approach integrating preventative and chemical measures:
- Cultivating resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
- Maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure adequate air circulation and light penetration.
- Balanced nutrient management to avoid excessive vegetative growth.
- Timely application of protective or systemic fungicides when environmental conditions are favorable for disease.
- Removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce the primary inoculum load.
