Description

Erysiphe is a genus of fungi belonging to the Erysiphaceae family, responsible for the disease commonly known as powdery mildew. As an obligate parasite, this fungus lives on the surface of plant tissues, creating a network of hyphae and using haustoria to penetrate the host cells to extract nutrients, which fundamentally weakens the plant.

The host range of Erysiphe is vast, affecting a wide variety of agricultural, horticultural, and ornamental plants. Key hosts include cereal crops like wheat and barley, vegetables such as cucumbers and squash, as well as fruits like grapes and strawberries. Many weed species also act as reservoir hosts, allowing the fungus to survive between growing seasons.

The primary symptom of Erysiphe infection is the appearance of white, powdery spots or patches on the leaves, stems, and fruits. These spots gradually expand and merge, eventually covering the entire surface of the plant part in a felt-like coating. Infected leaves often become yellow, curl, and die prematurely. In late stages, small black structures called cleistothecia appear within the white fungal mat.

Development and spread of the fungus are favored by warm, humid conditions, although it can thrive in a range of environments. Poor air circulation, dense planting, and excessive nitrogen fertilization significantly increase susceptibility. Spores are dispersed primarily by wind, enabling the pathogen to spread rapidly across fields or greenhouse structures once initial infection points are established.

The economic impact of powdery mildew is significant, as it severely reduces photosynthetic capacity and causes premature senescence. This leads to stunted plant growth, diminished yield quantity, and lower quality of harvested produce. If left unmanaged, the disease can lead to complete failure of the crop, particularly in susceptible varieties or during seasons with prolonged favorable weather.
