Description
Erysiphe alphitoides is the fungal pathogen responsible for oak powdery mildew, a widespread and economically significant disease affecting various oak species worldwide. As an obligate biotroph, the fungus extracts nutrients directly from the host's epidermal cells, causing significant stress to the tree's physiological systems.
The primary host for this fungus is the European oak (Quercus robur) and its relatives. While mature trees can tolerate moderate infection, the disease is particularly devastating for seedlings in nurseries and for young trees, often resulting in severe growth stunting and, in extreme cases, the death of young plants.
Symptoms appear as white, dusty patches on the surface of leaves and succulent shoots. As the infection progresses, these spots coalesce into a thick, felt-like white mycelial mat. Eventually, the infected tissues may twist, curl, or become distorted. Toward the end of the season, tiny black fruiting bodies called cleistothecia develop within the mycelium, allowing the fungus to overwinter on buds or fallen leaves.
Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Warm, humid weather is ideal for the rapid production and wind-dispersal of conidia. High-density plantings or lack of proper ventilation in nurseries facilitate the establishment of the disease, as the microclimate remains favorable for fungal growth over extended periods.
Managing Erysiphe alphitoides requires an integrated approach to maintain tree health. Key prevention and control methods include:
- Maintaining adequate spacing to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
- Removing and destroying infected plant debris to reduce initial inoculum.
- Applying preventive fungicide treatments, such as sulfur-based products or systemic fungicides, during the peak periods of shoot development.
- Selecting resistant varieties where breeding programs permit.
