Erysiphe clandestina is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for causing powdery mildew on elm trees. This organism is classified within the Erysiphaceae family and acts as an obligate parasite, significantly impacting the health and aesthetic value of the host plant.
The disease primarily targets trees within the genus Ulmus. It is commonly identified in forest nurseries, public urban parks, and residential landscapes, particularly in areas where trees are planted too closely or lack adequate airflow, creating a humid microclimate.
The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of a distinct white or light grey powdery coating on the surface of leaves and young succulent shoots. As the infection progresses, the mycelium layer thickens, and small, dark, dot-like structures known as cleistothecia develop, serving as the overwintering stage of the fungus.
Favorable conditions for the development and spread of Erysiphe clandestina include temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C combined with high humidity levels. Wind currents efficiently disperse the conidia, facilitating rapid transmission of the pathogen throughout a stand or nursery setting.
The impact of this disease is characterized by premature leaf drop, reduced photosynthetic activity, and overall stress on the host tree. Chronic infections significantly weaken the elm, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and secondary pest attacks, often hindering normal growth and development.
