Erysiphe depressa is an obligate parasitic fungus responsible for the development of powdery mildew. This pathogen is a member of the Erysiphaceae family and is specifically known for its affinity for hosts within the Asteraceae family, particularly the Arctium genus, commonly known as burdock.

The fungus primarily targets the leaves, stems, and petioles of burdock plants. While often found in wild populations, it can become a significant issue in areas where burdock is cultivated for its medicinal roots or foliage. The impact of the pathogen is centered on the degradation of the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which directly influences biomass accumulation.

The initial symptoms are characterized by the appearance of fine, white, web-like mycelial threads on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, this growth thickens and forms a distinct white powdery coating. Heavy infections result in chlorosis, drying of leaf margins, and ultimately premature defoliation, which stunts the overall growth of the host plant.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the life cycle of Erysiphe depressa. Warm days with cool, humid nights create an ideal climate for conidia germination and colonization. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions, such as winter, by forming specialized fruiting bodies known as chasmothecia (or cleistothecia) on dead plant tissues, which serve as the primary inoculum for the following spring.
