Description
Soybean powdery mildew is caused by the fungal pathogen Erysiphe diffusa, an obligate parasite that specifically infects soybean crops worldwide. As a biotrophic fungus, it requires living plant tissue to thrive and reproduce, drawing its nutritional requirements directly from the host's epidermal cells.
The primary host for this fungus is the soybean plant (Glycine max). While it primarily affects soybean fields, the pathogen can survive on various debris and, in some cases, alternative leguminous hosts, allowing the disease cycle to continue from one growing season to the next if environmental conditions are favorable.
The diagnostic symptoms of the disease include the appearance of small, white, circular patches of mycelium on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these patches expand and coalesce, eventually covering the entire leaf with a characteristic dusty or powdery white film. Severe infections cause leaves to turn chlorotic, curl, and drop prematurely.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Erysiphe diffusa. The fungus favors moderate temperatures and high humidity, often peaking during periods of cool, cloudy weather with frequent light rain or heavy dew. These conditions facilitate the release and spread of conidia, which are easily disseminated by wind throughout the field.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to smaller pods and lower seed weight. Integrated disease management is essential to minimize losses. This includes planting resistant cultivars, managing crop residues to reduce primary inoculum, and implementing timely fungicide applications when disease thresholds are reached to ensure maximum yield potential.
